So, you finally have some time to relax and catch up on some of your favorite action movies. Some are newer, some are classics, but you love to watch movies and you are always on the lookout for something that is capable of entertaining you for a couple of hours. The question is, where do you start if you really want to do some serious movie watching over a long weekend? You can start with this list, the top 10 action movies of all time. Granted, everyone will have their own opinion concerning which movies are really the best. With that being said, you really can’t go wrong when it comes to this list of action films. Suffice it to say, there is something on here for everybody, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding an action movie that you can really get into.
10. The Rock
Directed by Michael Bay, this is a movie that packs plenty of action into its approximately two-hour time slot. Starring Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage, this is an action movie that nearly everyone can enjoy. Sometimes it’s hard to tell who is on what side, but in the end, it all makes for a great action film. Besides, you know you are in for a treat when you have two action stars like these in starring in the same movie.
This film, directed by James Cameron, is one of the most impressive films of all time. It has more than its fair share of action, to be sure, but it also has some of the most interesting special effects that have ever been put into a movie. This is the vehicle that helped propel Arnold Schwarzenegger to fame, but the real treat is watching Robert Patrick as the infamous T-1000, a stone cold killer that could take the form of anything he wished. The liquid metal part was pretty cool, too.
Who doesn’t love a good Chuck Norris movie? After all, he is the commensurate good guy and we could all use more good guys in the world these days. He is definitely at his best in this film, tougher than nails and not willing to accept failure as an outcome, this film directed by Menahem Golan is a must-see favorite of virtually any movie buff with a special affinity for action films.
7. Bad Boys
Another film directed by Michael Bay, this one stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in a movie that incorporates both action and humor. The end result is that it pulls the audience in, sometimes making you laugh and at other times making you cringe, but in a good way. If you like explosions and flying bullets, not to mention some white knuckle car chases, you won’t be disappointed by this movie.
6. First Blood
This Ted Kotcheff film is a solid action movie, there’s no doubt about that. Starring Sylvester Stallone, it goes a long way towards helping people understand what it must be like to come home from war and feel alone, misunderstood, and even a little helpless. It does a really good job of demonstrating the emotional and mental hurdles that someone returning from war must face, not to mention the prejudice that is sometimes expressed by others.
This John Woo film stars John Travolta and Nicholas Cage. It is a good action film, but it also deals with some rather heavy issues concerning one’s need to take care of family members, not to mention what happens when it simply isn’t possible to do that.
Just like Chuck Norris, Liam Neeson has become one of the most solid actors when it comes to action movies. In this particular installment, directed by Pierre Morel, he must come save his daughter, who has been kidnapped while in Paris. Make no mistake about it, the people who were involved will come to regret that they ever chose her as a kidnapping victim; that is if they live long enough!
This Richard Donner film, starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, is easily one of the best action films that has ever been made. These guys have great chemistry together, and the humorous moments are interspersed with some very serious subject matter, not to mention tons of action. You’ve got car chases, gun fights, explosions, and plenty of angst, so grab the popcorn and settle in for a wild ride!
Not only did Mel Gibson star in this movie, he also directed it. It tells the story of Scotsman William Wallace, the man history credits with leading much of Scotland to freedom at great personal sacrifice. This movie has more than enough action for most people and it really plays with your emotions, too. One word of warning, if you love horses, just remember that none of them were really hurt during filming.
This is the classic that started it all, Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark. Starring Harrison Ford, this is a movie that is capable of transforming you into another world, one that is filled with adventure and peril. Indiana Jones has probably interested more people in archeology than anything or anyone else, has in the last 50 years. If you want action and humor mixed with a great storyline that is truly capable of transforming you at a different time, this is the movie to watch. When it’s over, you’ll probably decide to watch at least the next two movies in the series as well.
Well, there you have it. If you decide to spend your time watching any of the movies on this list, you certainly won’t be sorry. You might even feel exhausted after you finish your movie watching a marathon, just because the action is so real that you might forget you are just sitting on the couch watching the screen. Chances are, you’ll feel a lot more like you’re right there in the thick of things with the cast of your favorite action films.
